REGULATION CAA UPDATE 14 March 2025

CAA Tightens Drone Registration Rules — What Every UK Pilot Must Know in 2025

The Civil Aviation Authority has updated its UAS operator registration requirements. Here's a full breakdown of what's changed, who's affected, and the fines you're risking if you ignore it.

As of early 2025, the CAA has reinforced enforcement of the Operator ID and Flyer ID system introduced under the UK UAS Regulations 2018. Random spot-checks at popular flying sites have increased significantly, with fixed-penalty notices now being issued on-the-spot for unregistered operators.

What's changed?

The fines

Operating without a valid Operator ID carries a fixed penalty of £1,000. More serious breaches — such as flying near restricted airspace without permission — can result in prosecution under the Air Navigation Order 2016, carrying unlimited fines and potential imprisonment.

How to stay compliant

Register at register-drones.caa.co.uk. Renewal is annual and costs £10.33. Operator ID must be permanently displayed on the drone; Flyer ID must be carried during flight.
